Nothing can turn a new apartment or house into a house faster than painting the walls. But with so many colours and shades, choosing the perfect colour can often be difficult. To facilitate the process, we interviewed Kelly-Moore, who keeps picking with the nuances of their clients.
The brand was founded in 1946 by William H. Kelly and William E. Moore and began as a manufacturing facility and business in San Carlos, California. The company, which is in its own company, now has a second plant in, Texas, and is sold at dealerships and over 150 Kelly Moore stores in the U.S. Midwest and West.
(There are over 100 stores in California only.) The Kelly-Moore location in California inspires many of their colors, but also influenced their commitment to the environment. The company was the first company to offer recovered recycled and aqueous phase dyes at 0 VOC. Although many brands focus only on the individual mix, Kelly-Moore still offers a selection of standard or pre-mixed colors that helps ensure color consistency.
Kelly-Moore offers more than 1,700 colors, from bright red to deep black, but all common shades are classic neutrals. The warm shades of Swiss Coffee, Snip of Tannin and Antique White are the favourites of the customers. The list also includes some colder shades, such as the San Francisco fog and white white.
But if the best-selling colors are neutral, the company isn’t afraid of trends. The grey colours have been voted Color of the Year by Kelly-Moore Paint over the past two years. In 2016, Horizon Grey, a sober and quiet neutral, was the colour of the room and this year, Kettleman, a deep shadow took the top spot.
The company’s color experts estimate that the warmer neutrals, like the brown ones, will continue to become the dominant shades in 2018 alongside the red, green, orange and blue dampers. Whichever year, the company’s best-selling shades aren’t going anywhere. Thanks to their warm or neutral shades, they will harmonize perfectly with future trends. I believe in timeless colours more than colour-dense failures, like this green-grey with refined shades of grey. This colour can be found in your garden, your paintings and your vintage photos, but the lightness of the grey green makes it perfect for today’s house.
For a hot and medium-dark neutral, I love cinderblock. It makes it rich and sophisticated. Very relaxing and pleasant to the eye. I just finished a Victorian reading room where I used it on walls, shapes and ceilings as a home office and where my client loved it.
When people think about neutrals, they often think about the light and don’t have to. It’s a darker color that stays soft. It’s great with lots of bedding, antiques and vintage style, or it’s rich behind a contemporary white sectionality.
