There are literally thousands of colours on the market today and making a selection can be intimidating, or even completely confusing. Martha got it well when she decided to create her own colour spectrum in 1990. For Martha, simplicity in the selection process did not have the effect of sacrificing a wide range of colour palettes.
The story of Martha’s painting plinics dates back to the end of 1980, when she was hired as a lifestyle consultant for Kmart. From there, it became one of Martha’s most successful merchandising companies. Below is the story of Martha’s painter brands, founded with the help of my friend Kenn Raspberry. Enjoy!
She took her first steps in the world of painting via Kmart when she was hired as a lifestyle consultant for the brand in 1987. Martha was responsible for revitalizing the store’s sales and was invited as a spokeswoman for the company’s home program, which included a series of paintings by Dutch Boy.
While Martha was initially very little involved in pallet selection, Kmart asked her to use the paintings in her ads. Martha soon asked for her opinion on the colour selection process, yet her suggestions were often seen as too daring compared to the tried and tested “special builders” colours that sold so well.
No question of answering No to a question, Martha tried to create her own range of colour colours with the help of well-known colour specialist Eve Ashcraft. Based on the book “The Garden, Month By Month ” by Mabel Cabet Sedgewick, Martha and Eve developed a range of shades inspired by nature, from gentle greens to pale roses, from faded blues to rich Reds.
Martha took her rehearsals to Fine Paints of Europe, who then made the painting with Schreuder paintings. The original palette of “garden colors ” contained only 29 colors and was not widely used. It wasn’t until Martha launched her shipping catalogue, Martha by Mail, that the paintings found an audience.
In 1995, Martha added “Araucana Colors “-inspired by the eggshells of her Araucana hens and later “The Colours of Skylands ” (49 colors), inspired by her home in Maine. In 1997, when Martha Stewart Living renegotiated the terms of her partnership agreement with Kmart, Martha and her team had creative control over her eponymous brand and Martha created her first line of mainstream painting called Martha Stewart Everyday Colors.
The collection included hundreds of colour variants and was then expanded to include enamel colours and accessories, including rolls, brushes, paint containers and other painting tools. The Martha Stewart Everyday Colins line has become the most successful mall line in Kmart history.
After abandoning her paint plants in all retail markets, Martha was close to reporting a paint line to a major distributor. This time it was Home Depot. The Martha Stewart Living paint line was launched in March 2010 with 250 original shades, including indoor and outdoor varieties.
The colors were formulated to contain low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to minimize color gases. In 2011, the line was expanded to include special surfaces, including metallic and textured surfaces. Accessories, including brushes, reels and special tools to create mock effects such as faux Boix, have also been developed. The colour marrow stopped just two years later, but the colour palettes remained available to be mixed with the Giddens colour plinths.
